I usually see mediocrity on the terms of how badly it was built (moreso on the manufacturing process.) Then again, most of BL's offerings were somewhat decent if they looked at Japanese philosophy for production.

Well, but as the first prototype came out the same year as the Leyland merger and had been in the works quite a while, it hardly seems like a + mark on the Leyland side of the ledger. What were they going to do, not produce it?

IIRC the biggest issue with BL was quality control and excessive badge engineering rather than mediocre cars per se . When the Rover SD1 came out, it was applauded - until the first examples started being used.

There's enormous potential in the overall platform of the SD1. If one were to have one not made by BL (i.e. one of the licenses or one completely rebuilt by oneself), it'd be far nicer as a car.
